Colorado self-solemnization statute

Getting Married

Colorado allows three ceremony types per C.R.S. 14-2-109. Religious ceremonies use clergy. Civil ceremonies use judges or magistrates. Self-solemnization requires no officiant.

Self-solemnization is unique to Colorado. You sign the certificate as both officiant and couple. No third party is needed. Fill in the date, time, and place. Return it within 63 days.

For civil ceremonies, contact a judge or magistrate in Garfield County. Religious ceremonies need an officiant from a recognized denomination or tribe.

Witnesses are optional. Any age is fine if you choose to have them.

Recording Your Marriage

Return the completed certificate to Garfield County within 63 days. The officiant usually handles this. If you self-solemnized, you return it yourself.

Late returns cost $20 plus $5 per day up to $50 max. Return it on time to avoid fees.

Certified copies cost $1.25 each from the county. For old records, contact Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment at 303-692-2000 or cdphe.colorado.gov/vitalrecords. State copies cost $17.

Common Law Marriage

Colorado recognizes common law marriage. You can be legally married without a license if you live together and present yourselves as married. Both must intend to be married.

A formal license provides better proof. If you want to make a common law marriage official, get a license and self-solemnize.
