Getting Married

Colorado allows three options per C.R.S. 14-2-109. Religious with clergy. Civil with a judge. Self-solemnization with no officiant.

Self-solemnization is unique to Colorado. Sign as both officiant and couple. No third party needed. Fill in date, time, and place. Return within 63 days.

For civil ceremonies, contact a local judge or magistrate. Religious ceremonies need clergy from a recognized denomination.

Witnesses are optional. Any age if you want them.

Recording Your Marriage

Return the certificate to Grand County within 63 days. Officiant usually handles this. Self-solemnizers return it themselves.

Late fees: $20 plus $5 daily up to $50 max. Return on time to skip fees.

Certified copies cost $1.25 each from the county. For historical records, contact Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment at 303-692-2000 or cdphe.colorado.gov/vitalrecords. State copies $17.

Common Law Marriage

Colorado recognizes common law marriage. You can be married without a license if you meet requirements. Must live together, present as married, and both intend it.

A formal license provides better proof. To make common law official, get a license and self-solemnize.
